  1. BOSTON, MASS., February 11, 1992--Digital Products, the leader in printer
  2. sharing technology, is featuring the PrintDirector Gold Turbo, a new
  3. generation in printer sharing products that emphasizes both speed and
  4. flexibility at NETWORLD BOSTON. The PrintDirector Gold Turbo series has an
  5. output speed of 100,000 bps--the speed of the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet
  6. IIISi. Currently most printer sharing products are limited to speeds
  7. ranging from 2000 to 23,000 bps.

  10. and Data Products with speeds of up to 100,000 bps, shows that printer
  11. manufacturers are committed to producing printers that can print business
  12. graphics at the rated page per minute speed of the printer. Digital
  13. Products is committing to producing printer sharing devices fast enough to
  14. handle those printers," said Cornelius "Pete" Peterson, president of

  17. The PrintDirector Gold Turbo is available in 6 and 10 port models with
  18. additional models scheduled for release in the second quarter of 1992.

  20. Both 6 and 10 port models feature 2 parallel output ports with a maximum
  21. output speed of 100,000 bps. For additional flexibility, printers may be
  22. located up to 100' feet away from the PrintDirector Gold Turbo without any
  23. degradation in speed. Normally, parallel connections are limited to 15'.

  25. The remaining ports (4 on the 6 port, 8 on the 10 port) feature Digital
  26. Products' Uniport technology. A special adapter converts any or all of the
  27. "Uniports" into a parallel input port that support PCs printing out of the
  28. parallel port up to 5000' away. When the parallel adapter is connected,
  29. the Uniport automatically configures itself to support the correct
  30. protocol. Uniports also provide support for both modular two pair and four
  31. pair serial wiring and can be transformed into standard DB25 serial ports
  32. with an adapter plug.

  34. All Uniports are user definable as input or output allowing the
  35. PrintDirector Gold Turbo to share additional peripherals including modems
  36. and plotters or other printers.

  38. "With Uniport technology, the PrintDirector Gold Turbo is not only the
  39. fastest printer sharing product available, it is the most flexible. One
  40. product does it all." said Peterson.

  42. PrintDirector Gold Turbo can be installed in minutes without software by
  43. using the factory default configuration. Users who want full access to the
  44. Turbo's printer and peripheral selection software can use the easy
  45. menu-driven installation program. DOCTOR diagnostic software is included
  46. with the PrintDirector Gold Turbo to identify and, in many cases, correct
  47. problems with cables and baud rates.

  49. PrintDirector Gold Turbo offers two ways to select printers. AutoSelector
  50. is a 2K TSR that, once configured and installed, automatically selects a
  51. user's printer. AutoSelector also supports printing from within WINDOWS,
  52. an environment that has previously provided problems for users of printer
  53. sharing products. PDPop, a 14K TSR, lets users access the features of the
  54. newest printers including duplex printing. PDPOP can be accessed from
  55. within the user's applications software.

  57. Users of multi-emulation printers such as the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet
  58. IIISi will benefit from the AutoSelector's automatic emulation switching.
  59. AutoSelector analyzes a print job as it sends it and automatically sends
  60. down a command string to switch the printer to the appropriate mode, in
  61. most cases either PostScript or HP PCL.

  63. AutoSelector also analyzes print data to ensure a print job is delivered to
  64. the correct printer. For example, if both a PCL and PostScript printer
  65. were connected to the PrintDirector Gold Turbo, AutoSelector would ensure
  66. the PostScript job was delivered to the PostScript printer.

  68. "Sending a job to a printer set to the wrong emulation by the previous user
  69. is one of the biggest complaint of users of multi-emulation printers. With
  70. the PrintDirector Gold Turbo, users are better assured of printing
  71. correctly the first time," said Peterson.

  73. PrintDirector Gold Turbo includes all the features of the current
  74. PrintDirector Gold line. For simple office connectivity users can easily
  75. transfer files using the product's integrated file transfer software.
  76. Mainframe users can share local laser printers with the addition of a 3287
  77. protocol converter.

  79. A maximum buffer of twelve (12) megabytes allows the PrintDirector Gold
  80. Turbo to support data intensive printing environments such as graphics and
  81. CAD/CAM.

  84. one megabyte (1MB). The PrintDirector Gold Turbo 10 port is priced at
  85. $1395 and includes a buffer of (1MB). The Parallel Uniport adapter to
  86. connect the PC to the PrintDirector Gold Turbo port is priced at $80.
